Abstract
Edna Lemay, après un rappel du contexte de leur installation, dresse un portrait de groupe des 768 représentants à l’Assemblée législative, qui siégea d’octobre 1791 à septembre 1792 ; plus jeunes que leurs prédécesseurs à l’Assemblée constituante, ils sont également plus représentatifs de la bourgeoisie provinciale qui s’essaya à la gestion des affaires à travers les fonctions électives dans les nouvelles administrations locales. Ils durent affronter des défis considérables, dont l’entrée en guerre du pays, les tensions provoquées par les questions religieuses, la liquidation de la féodalité, les troubles coloniaux. Mais c’est le conflit avec l’exécutif qui allait surtout provoquer les principaux clivages, jusqu’au dramatique été 1792 qui allait emporter cette fragile ébauche de monarchie constitutionnelle.Les destins ultérieurs, tantôt marqués par une fin tragique, tantôt par une longévité plus ou moins couverte d’honneurs, sont également retracés, à travers plusieurs tableaux synthétiques.
