L'étude du discours religieux paru dans des revues des années cinquante démontre un grande indignation du clergé vis-à-vis de l'érotisme contenu dans les romans populaires. C'est que cette thématique, très peu étudiée jusqu'à maintenant, entrait en conflit direct avec les valeurs défendues par le pouvoir ecclésiastique. Impuissant à contrôler la diffusion de la littérature érotique, l'institution cléricale n'a d'autre choix que de faire appel à la justice civile qui, elle, est plus en mesure d'exercer une répression contre cette littérature. De telle sorte que le gouvernement fédéral adopte la Loi Fulton en 1959. Sous les termes de cette loi seront jugés L'amant de Lady Chatterley de D.H. Lawrence en I960 et Histoire d'O de Pauline Réage en 1967. Les verdicts d'acquittement et d'abandon de poursuite témoignent de l'impuissance des institutions censoriales devant une révolution cachée mais non moins importante : celle de l'acceptation sociale de la littérature érotique.
