Abstract
À partir du documentaire S21, la machine de mort khmère rouge du cinéaste cambodgien Rithy Panh mais aussi de réflexions menées par des anthropologues et des philosophes, cet article se propose de revenir sur le lieu du crime où des milliers de personnes furent interrogées, torturées et exécutées. Il s’agit d’apprécier comment une machine (le cinéma) tente de comprendre les mécanismes d’une autre machine, celle qui transforme des êtres ordinaires en bêtes sanguinaires. Dans cette perspective, le cinéma ne se limite plus à rendre compte du travail de la mort, mais de la mort au travail. En suscitant des situations inédites qui donnent à voir l’avènement d’un événement et par là même défient l’indicible de la mort, le cinéma révèle et recèle du sens. L’expérience génocidaire laisse des traces, mais pas forcément celles auxquelles on pense.
