Abstract
L'œuvre de Fernand Dumont est traversée par une préoccupation récurrente quant à l'avenir de la mémoire dans les sociétés de la modernité. Il ne saurait y avoir de culture sans référence au passé, considéré comme un élément permettant aux individus et aux collectivités de se situer par rapport au monde et de lui donner un sens. Dans les sociétés archaïques, le sens était donné d'emblée par la tradition. La société moderne, en rendant l'avenir problématique, donc sujet à interprétations, oblige à une nouvelle construction de la mémoire pour donner un sens à l'action. L'historien apparaît, à cet égard, comme un prototype de l'homme moderne, car il doit rendre compte à la fois de la prodigieuse ouverture à des événements multiples et de leur perpétuelle contestation. Dans sa démarche scientifique, l'historien fait face à un phénomène de dédoublement semblable à celui qu'on peut observer dans l'ensemble des sciences humaines : en cherchant par une méthodologie qui se veut objective à reconstituer les faits et à les analyser, il ne peut échapper à la subjectivité, sorte de résidu de la démarche scientifique, qui relève d'une recherche plus ou moins explicite des significations. C'est à partir de ce résidu que Dumont propose de fonder une nouvelle science de l'interprétation.
