Abstract
Adoptant une perspective genrée, cet article analyse des textes tirés de publications médicales et religieuses afin de voir comment y sont conçus les sports au Québec, de 1920 à 1950. Il montre que les médecins et les clercs véhiculent une conception utilitaire et humaniste des sports, selon laquelle ceux-ci servent à enseigner les habiletés physiques et morales jugées nécessaires pour performer dans la société industrielle. Les hommes sont alors vivement encouragés à pratiquer des sports puisqu’ils leur permettent de mieux servir, dans les industries et l’armée, les intérêts de la nation, contribuant ainsi à en affermir la puissance. Vues comme celles qui engendrent le « capital humain », les femmes sont invitées à pratiquer des sports afin qu’elles-mêmes et leurs enfants soient en bonne santé. Craignant cependant que certains sports abîment le corps maternel ou menacent l’ordre hétérosexuel, le discours médical et religieux circonscrit l’accès des femmes au domaine sportif.
