Abstract
En reprenant la vieille distinction allemande entre culture et civilisation, le présent texte vise à rendre compte des aléas géopolitiques de la langue au Québec. Trois moments éclairent un lien différent de la langue au pouvoir et à la géographie: l’Empire français, le Canada français, le Québec. Retracer l’histoire de ces moments, c’est révéler l’histoire de la langue nationale comme médiatrice entre la culture et la civilisation. C’est pourquoi la question du Québec reste une question politique centrale aujourd’hui: comment maintenir par la langue un lien entre civilisation et culture?
