Abstract
L'élection du Dr Gro Harlem Brundtland (Norvège), en mai 1998, comme Directeur général de l'Organisation mondiale de la Santé (pus), a été ressentie comme le signal et l'espoir d'un renouveau pour cette agence spécialisée des Nations Unies. L'article rappelle les critiques portées contre la gestion du prédécesseur du Dr Brundtland, le Dr Hiroshi Nakajima (Japon), pendant ses deux mandats de cinq ans. Ce dernier avait amorcé un processus de réforme, endossé par l'Assemblée mondiale de la Santé en 1993. Des groupes indépendants ont estimé que les réformes proposées étaient insuffisantes et ont identifié les principales questions à résoudre. Dès sa nomination, le Dr Brundtland a exprimé clairement la nécessité d'un changement et pris quelques mesures spectaculaires. Une véritable évaluation de sa gestion et de son impact sur I'OMS devra être entreprise à la fin de son premier mandat, en 2003
