Abstract
Le choix des prénoms, aspect encore peu exploré des données démographiques, offre des possibilités intéressantes de recherche. C’est à partir de ce postulat qu’a été réalisée la présente étude, tirée des registres de baptêmes de la paroisse Sainte-Anne-des-Pins de Sudbury au tournant du XXe siècle, soit de 1884 à 1913. Ces registres permettent de comparer l’évolution de l’attribution des prénoms dans deux cultures voisines, l’anglophone et la francophone. On constate, entre autres, une augmentation du nombre de prénoms attribués à chaque enfant, l’importance croissante des prénoms Marie et Joseph, et la transmission aux enfants des prénoms de leurs parents, parrains et marraines. Un sondage dans la période 1945-1950 permet de suggérer, chez les francophones, la stabilité des pratiques découvertes à la génération précédente.
