Au cours des dernières années, les enjeux liés à l’acceptabilité sociale des activités économiques, en particulier dans le secteur extractif, se sont imposées comme des enjeux significatifs tant pour les entreprises, en tant qu’investisseurs directs et opérateurs des projets que pour les pouvoirs publics, comme promoteurs de projets de développement économique local et régional. Notre argument principal est que le mode de pensée vers le développement local résilient devrait remplacer celui promouvant la seule réalisation de l’acceptabilité sociale. En effet, la perspective d’obtention de l’acceptabilité sociale des activités économiques – comme approche centrée sur la prévention et la résolution de conflits souvent dans le court terme – est trop restreinte. Aussi, elle devrait être remplacée par une vision plus large vers la réalisation d’un développement local résilient autour de trois piliers : la diversification économique, la recherche de la cohésion sociale locale et la viabilité écologique. L’apport de cet article est double. D’abord, il fait le point sur la notion d’acceptabilité sociale des projets à partir de la littérature provenant du secteur des ressources naturelles. Ensuite, il identifie deux modes de pensée complémentaires afin de dépasser la simple focalisation sur l’acceptabilité sociale vers le développement local résilient.
