Abstract
Le système paneuropéen de certification forestière, PEFC, a été élaboré pour tenir compte au mieux de l'identité des forêts européennes résultant de réalités macro-économiques, humaines et culturelles. Il est fondé sur les résultats des négociations internationales officielles en matière de gestion durable des forêts, les directives de l'Organisation internationale de Normalisation (ISO), et une approche régionale. Il s'appuie à la fois sur les propriétaires et gestionnaires de forêts, les transformateurs et utilisateurs de bois et divers organes représentant les consommateurs. Actuellement, quinze pays européens et deux pays nord-américains adhèrent à ce système ; huit schémas nationaux ont été reconnus (dont le schéma français) et cinq sont en cours de reconnaissance. On attend maintenant de ce système qu'il contribue à la fois à la promotion du bois et à l'amélioration de la gestion des forêts.
