Abstract
Dans cet article, nous examinons la variation phonétique du son hl devant R et L en français cadien dans le parler de femmes nées entre 1890 et 1949 et originaires de quatre paroisses dans le sud de la Louisiane. Construit à partir de deux bases de données, notre échantillon comporte 29 locutrices cadiennes réparties sur quatre générations. Nous discuterons des sources latines de la variation phonétique, de l'évolution diachronique de la variable en France jusqu'au 20 e siècle, et de son emploi en Acadie, au Canada. Nous présenterons ensuite l'usage intergénérationnel des deux variantes [O] et [o] par les locutrices cadiennes. Les aînées et les cadettes semblent instaurer un changement linguistique comparé aux générations précédentes, qui font un usage variable mais stable des deux variantes. Puisque l'hypothèse d'un changement linguistique en cours ne nous satisfait point, nous examinons la variation stylistique dans deux entrevues différentes.
