Abstract
Héritée du code de l’action oratoire et étroitement liée aux règles dramaturgiques de la vraisemblance et de la bienséance, l’exigence de convenance est au fondement de l’art de la déclamation dans la tragédie française de la seconde moitié du XVIIe siècle. Elle incite à s’interroger sur l’usage et les caractéristiques d’un excès vocal apparemment constitutif de la déclamation tragique : le cri. Celui-ci pose en effet plusieurs problèmes esthétiques et éthiques : inarticulé et violent, il renvoie à une animalité et à un emportement incompatibles avec la poétique de la tragédie classique. Pour la rendre convenable, la véhémence du cri est dès lors mesurée par des règles de hauteur, d’intensité et de variété qui opèrent tant sur le plan scénique que sur le plan scriptural, notamment par la gestion dramaturgique des figures pathétiques. Ainsi ramené à cette juste mesure, le cri tragique participe pleinement de l’esthétique distanciée d’une déclamation qui vise à plaire à l’auditeur autant qu’à le toucher.
