Il s’agit dans ce texte avant tout de clarifier des termes qui reviennent souvent dans les recherches et réflexions dans le domaine des sciences environnementales, et qui sont souvent considérés comme des équivalents. Il s’agit de la multidisciplinarité, de l’interdisciplinarité et de la transdisciplinarité, ce qui suppose de clarifier ce que c’est que de travailler dans une discipline (la « disciplinarité ») et d’avoir dans sa boîte à outils une pluralité de compétences disciplinaires (la « pluridisciplinarité »). Ces propositions de distinctions sont mises en relief en regardant en particulier les problèmes de gouvernance de l’eau
