Abstract
Carbon sources and antioxidants play decisive roles in developing carbon-containing castables for the steelmaking industry. To take full advantage of natural flake graphite over other forms of carbon, different approaches of packaging flake graphite into castables have been investigated in which extruded graphite pellets with the appropriate oxide filler and antioxidants are the most promising so far. Characterization of extruded graphite pellets and their use in magnesia-based castables in terms of flowability, physical, mechanical, oxidation and corrosion properties are presented.
