Abstract
L’hostilité de la pensée catholique face à la ville moderne est bien documentée. Ce n’est que tardivement que l’Église changerait de cap et développerait une expertise et des savoirs urbains. Dans cet article, j’offre une vision plus nuancée des choses en me penchant sur le cas québécois. J’y démontre que les intellectuels catholiques canadiens-français de l’entre-deux-guerres se posent déjà la question de la conciliation du monde urbain industrialisé et des valeurs catholiques. Les réponses qu’ils proposent sont parfois maladroites, mais elles témoignent d’une sincère volonté d’habiter la ville, de vivre en citadins dans une cité qui refléterait, dans la mesure du possible, leurs valeurs et leur identité. Je démontre, du même souffle, que si leur rapport à la ville est coloré par la doctrine sociale de l’Église, il l’est aussi par un nationalisme canadien-français qui entretient des liens étroits avec le catholicisme durant la première moitié du XXe siècle.
