Le projet scientifique que revendique aujourd’hui l’ethnologie de la France s’est progressivement constitué au cours des deux derniers siècles. À l’examen des conditions de cette longue élaboration, il apparaît que le « terrain » breton y a joué un rôle de premier plan : depuis l’intérêt manifesté par les antiquaires de l’Académie celtique au début du xixe siècle jusqu’aux objectifs affichés par la Recherche concertée sur programme (RCP) menée à Plozévet dans les années 1960, en passant par les collectes exemplaires effectuées par les folkloristes de la fin du xixe ou encore les enquêtes diligentées par le Musée national des arts et traditions populaires dans les années 1930, l’une et l’autre démarches ayant donné en Bretagne des résultats particulièrement fructueux… Après avoir rapidement rappelé la place effectivement donnée à la Bretagne dans de nombreuses étapes de cette construction du projet scientifique d’une ethnologie de la France, le propos de ma communication sera de tenter de lui trouver des éléments d’explication, au rang desquels faut-il sans doute considérer l’idée même de marge, associée d’une part à la Bretagne « à la marge » (de l’espace national) et d’autre part à ses habitants « en marge » (de la société globale).
