Félix Mayol et Maurice Chevalier sont deux des chanteurs les plus aimés du public, l’un à la Belle Époque, l’autre dans l’entre-deux guerres. Leurs carrières sont liées à l’évolution du spectacle de divertissement dans la première moitié du XXe siècle, du café-concert au music-hall et au cinéma parlant. Tous deux publient leurs souvenirs, faisant évoluer le genre de l’autobiographie de chanteur.Dans leur conception, ces récits diffèrent de ceux qui les ont précédés au XIXe siècle : des espaces blancs y divisaient le texte en micro-unités, anecdotes, mots d’esprit ; la part du reportage sur le milieu du spectacle y était très importante. Mayol innove en choisissant la formule d’un long entretien avec un journaliste ; Chevalier écrit lui-même. Si chez Mayol l’influence de l’écriture journalistique reste importante, les unités narratives sont déjà étoffées ; et Chevalier donne un récit d’apprentissage centré sur la personnalité de l’auteur. Cela au moment où les genres (troupier, paysan, gommeuse…) passent de mode au profit des vedettes. Sur scène comme dans les récits, la tendance est à l’individualisation, le chanteur à succès devient un personnage unique, inimitable. D’autres aspects sont à verser au dossier d’une caractérisation du genre. Tout d’abord le toilettage de la biographie, expurgée de ce qui pourrait déplaire à une partie du public (homosexualité pour Mayol, attitude pendant l’occupation pour Chevalier). D’autre part ces récits de réussite d’enfants du peuple sont traversés dans toutes leurs dimensions – thématique, écriture, langue – par des questions qui sont au cœur de la culture médiatique : comment une telle trajectoire sociale est-elle possible ? Comment plaire à tous en venant d’un milieu et d’une culture populaire ? Quid de l’identité de l’artiste ? Enfin, sur des modes différents, les textes tentent de transposer la relation qui s’établit entre artiste et public dans le spectacle vivant : parole, rythme, présence du corps, rire et émotion partagés.
