Abstract
Au lendemain de la Conquête, les Anglais puisent leur jurisprudence, leur politique et leur littérature à même celles de leur mère patrie avec laquelle ils continuent de s'identifier. Quant aux Canadiens, ils constituent encore un peuple jeune qui, sans renier ses ancêtres d'outre-mer, cherche à forger sa propre identité. Au sein de cette population mixte, les gens de justice ont contribué de façon importante à l'édition d’ouvrages juridiques, historiques, politiques, scientifiques, pédagogiques et littéraires. Le présent article vise non pas une critique de l'oeuvre de chaque auteur, mais une analyse du contexte social, juridique et politique qui a pu influer sur les centres d'intérêt, la qualité et la quantité des oeuvres produites par l'ensemble des auteurs du monde judiciaire de la capitale avant la Confédération.
