De quelle manière les représentations visuelles de la « lecture d’écran » renouvellent-elles l’imaginaire de la lecture? L’article propose de réfléchir aux transitions culturelles entre les modalités de lecture sur papier et sur écran à partir de l’analyse sémiologique d’un ensemble iconographique de scènes de lecture sur écran, en focalisant sur l’iconographie publicitaire pour la tablette numérique iPad. D’abord, la recherche souligne l’omniprésence d’une rhétorique du mode d’emploi dans ces images promotionnelles en les croisant avec un corpus d’images publicitaires pour l’édition. Nous interrogeons ensuite la manière dont l’écran est traité dans l’esthétique publicitaire comme espace de visibilité du texte et comme limite matérielle de celui-ci. Enfin, cette esthétique place le passant dans une position d’identification physique au lecteur représenté mais également dans une posture d’extériorité. L’article engage une réflexion sur la manière dont les motifs des scènes de lecture d’écran définissent un rapport à un texte vu plutôt que lu.
