Le portrait sociographique de l'évolution agricole et rurale du Bas-Saint-Laurent est établi à partir de certains indices tirés des recensements agricoles de Statistique Canada et l'analyse s'organise en six sections. On montre d'abord comment cette région se caractérise par la formation d'une économie agricole dualiste, avec une agriculture prospère sur les basses terres et la colonisation agroforestière dans le Haut-Pays. L'éclatement du système agroforestier et la généralisation de l'agriculture marchande entraînent une importante «déprise» agricole dans le Bas-Saint-Laurent. On aborde ensuite un autre aspect de ce déclin : le rétrécissement et la sous-utilisation du territoire agricole régional. Puis on montre comment cette situation est aussi le résultat de l'intégration de l'économie agricole au marché qui disqualifie l'agriculture polyvalente au profit de l'agriculture spécialisée. Dans les deux autres sections qui suivent, on tente d'évaluer l'impact de ces changements en montrant comment la modernisation agricole est finalement concomitante avec une marginalisation de l'économie agricole bas-laurentienne dans l'agriculture québécoise et en nous questionnant sur le destin des anciennes zones de colonisation agroforestières constitutives de cet espace et de cette société régionale. En conclusion, on commente ces mutations et leur signification dans l'évolution de la ruralité québécoise.
