Impact of Exercise on Quality of Life in Crohnʼs Disease Patients

Abstract
The quality of life in Crohn's disease patients is decreased in an active disease state, but also in disease remission. Exercise has been shown to positively affect quality of life in both sedentary individuals and patients suffering from chronic disease. PURPOSE: This study examines the effects of a low intensity walking program on the quality of life in Crohn's disease patients. METHODS: Thirty-two patients in remission or with mildly active disease were equally randomized into 2 groups: an exercise group (9 females; 7 males; average age 40.6±11.7) and a non-exercise group (9 females;7 males; average age 37.0±12.7). Patients performed low intensity walking at an interval of 3 times per week for a duration of 3 months. Each walking session lasted for 30 minutes. The Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire, the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Stress Index, and the Harvey and Bradshaw Simple Index were used as outcome measurements to detect possible changes in regards to quality of life. Survey measurements were recorded at one month intervals upon commencement of walking program. RESULTS: Patients in the exercise group experienced a statistically significant (p <0.05) improvement in quality of life in all three of the outcome measurement questionnaires with no detrimental effects in terms of disease activity. CONCLUSION: A low intensity walking program may have a beneficial effect in Crohn's disease patients and improve their quality of life. This information will be of use to physicians who care for these patients and may encourage them to prescribe low intensity exercise programs for this population.
