Le domaine des échanges culturels internationaux peine à se laisser étudier. Au confluent de champs disciplinaires fort variés, il semble être rétif à une observation et, par là, à une analyse panoptique. Une approche communicationnelle de la destinée de certains de ces échanges semble toutefois permettre aux chercheurs d’éviter certains écueils méthodologiques. À travers l’analyse des différents documents de communication relatifs à l’expérience à l’étranger du metteur en scène français André Antoine au tournant du 20 e siècle, on saisit le rôle moteur de l’exportation des productions théâtrales dans l’économie du spectacle vivant de l’époque et ce, tant sur les plans financier, symbolique, médiatique qu’artistique. On distingue surtout l’hétérogénéité des processus à l’œuvre lors de la mise en place de ces échanges que l’on peut catégoriser soit comme un travail de diffusion, soit comme un travail de traduction .
