Abstract
This article discusses the recent hypothesis, according to which a type of house hitherto believed to belong to the Hellenistic period on Delos could go back to the Classical period (5th c. BC): a simple elongated house, organised around a court, into which a typical group of two or three rooms (oecus major and annexe[s]) opens at the back, and a vestibule and service rooms in the front. A reexamination is proposed of House Ο in Insula III of the Theatre Quarter, which serves as a proof of this hypothesis. Based on the visible walls, four phases can be distinguished: it was only in the second phase that the house under consideration here was constructed, integrating preexisting walls of the Classical period (first phase) ; it was part of the first "urbanising programme" attested in the quarter and cannot antedate the construction of the theatre in the 3rd century BC. After a transformation with embellishments (third phase), in the course of which were added latrines, additional rooms and a colonnade, an oil-press was installed in the house at the beginning of the lst century BC (fourth phase).
