Au Canada anglais comme au Canada français, la nouvelle fleurit depuis longtemps, mais de manière apparemment fort divergente, surtout si on l'étudié sous l'angle des représentations spatiales. À la lecture de recueils publiés de 1930 à 1980, on se rend compte que l'effet produit est celui d'une mosaïque. Cela se traduit par des postures esthétiques qui elles-mêmes trahissent des positions existentielles différentes, selon que l'on appartient à un groupe ou à l'autre. Au Québec, la nouvelle problématise souvent le désencrage spatial, la dérive de l'espace lui-même, alors qu'au Canada anglais, lesnouvelliers mettent l'accent sur les mouvements dans l'espace. Ainsi, la nouvelle au Canada serait le lieu privilégié de la dichotomie biculturelle et binationale, la nouvelle de langue française illustrant le drame d'un espace qui échappe à un certain contrôle, alors qu'au Canada anglais, elle donne à voir le caractère insaisissable du Canada front coast to coast. L'imaginaire canadien dévoile une partie de ses secrets à travers le morcellement d'un genre, le texte narratif bref, qui se construit toujours lui-même comme le spectacle d'une mosaïque.
