Como resultado do trabalho de pesquisadores que buscaram melhor compreender a relação entre conhecimento e evidência e seu uso em diversos contextos, nos processos de decisão no campo da atenção à saúde, a Universidade de Toronto lançou em 2004 a coletânea Using Knowledge and Evidence in Health Care: Multidisciplinary Perspectives (ainda não traduzido para o português). Seus autores realizaram uma ampla discussão sobre uma das principais vertentes contemporâneas tanto da pesquisa na atenção à saúde, da formulação de políticas, quanto da prestação de serviços, que é a "decisão baseada em evidências" (em inglês "evidence based decision making" – EBDM).
