À partir de la découverte de trois types de médailles religieuses en laiton mises au jour dans un contexte archéologique du début du XVIII e siècle sur le site du Palais de l'intendant à Québec, l'auteur tente de retrouver leur signification culturelle en les réinsérant dans les différents contextes auxquels elles ont participé. Cette démarche d'archéologie contextuelle est fondée sur une approche qui va de la micro-échelle de l'intendance, en passant par celle de la Nouvelle-France, jusqu'à la macro-échelle du contexte européen de la production baroque. Les résultats tirés de cette analyse permettent d'aborder la question de la relation entre ces médailles et l'action missionnaire ainsi que les métissages.
