Abstract
Members of the Society's Public Affairs Committee offer valuable guidance to the organization's public affairs activities, especially in reviewing ESA draft position statements and papers. The Public Affairs Committee (PAC) met in August 2007 and in March 2008. Working with the Program Committee and Education Vice President, the PAC identified candidates to invite as the Society's Opening Plenary speaker. The Opening Plenary speaker at ESA's 2008 Annual Meeting will be Thomas Lovejoy, President of the Heinz Center and founder of the public television series, Nature. The PAC developed guidelines for a new ESA Regional Policy Award, which the Governing Board approved. The first recipient of this award will be Wisconsin Governor Jim Doyle, who has been invited to receive the award at the start of the 2008 Opening Plenary. Nominations came from the ESA local host committee and from PAC members. At its March 2008 meeting, PAC also discussed a potential PAC-sponsored symposium for the 2009 Albuquerque Annual Meeting on “communicating uncertainty.” PAC members also met with the Office of Representative Gerald McNerny (D-CA) a mathematician and wind engineer who serves on the House Science and Technology Committee, as well as on the Select Energy Independence and Global Warming Committee. The group discussed the Society's biofuels statement and conference. At the 2007 Annual Meeting, the Committee, led by Vice President for Public Affairs Rich Pouyat, together with public affairs staff, organized a public outreach event on wetland restoration. ESA Local Host Rachel O'Malley provided some local insights and guidance. The event targeted the local public in San Jose and featured a presentation by John Callaway of the University of San Francisco that examined wetland protection since the enactment of the Clean Water Act. Members of the general public, students, city environmental officials, conservation organizations, and the Dean of the College of Social Sciences at San Jose State University attended the event. 2007 Annual Meeting sessions in which PAC members and public affairs staff participated or helped organize included an organized oral session on science policy participants, a workshop on communicating science to the public, an improv comedy special session to ease presentation ‘jitters’, and an evening session focused on bridging the worlds of science and journalism. Members of the PAC are Richard Pouyat (Vice President, US Forest Service), Angela Bednarek (Pew Charitable Trusts), Elena Bennett (McGill University), Cheryl Dybas (National Science Foundation), Rick Haeuber (Environmental Protection Agency), Elizabeth Harp (Colorado State University, ESA Student Representative), and Kathleen Weathers (Institute of Ecosystem Studies).
