Abstract
La participation politique des exclus a le plus souvent été analysée sous l’angle de l’apathie politique, du fait de la conjonction de déterminants socioéconomiques négatifs. Les femmes immigrées qui résident dans des enclaves ethniques ségréguées des villes américaines, « triple minorité » (de genre, de classe et d’origine ethnique), paraissent se heurter à l’impossibilité de l’engagement. Pourtant, le questionnement sur les « frontières du politique » montre que la distinction public / privé restreint l’appréhension de l’engagement des exclus. L’étude empirique d’un barrio, quartier mexicain ségrégué de la ville de San Diego (Californie), révèle l’existence de « pratiques politiques du quotidien ». Le présent article décrit d’abord comment la gentrification devient un enjeu mobilisateur pour les femmes du barrio pour ensuite démontrer que la constitution d’un « capital social féminin », vertical et horizontal, forme la base fondamentale de cet engagement.
