Abstract
Cet article examine l’interprétation arendtienne de la vie politique moderne. À l’encontre de ce que soutiennent de nombreux commentateurs de cette philosophe, à savoir que celle-ci conçoit la modernité comme parfaitement homogène, entièrement vouée à l’emprise de la technique et de la consommation, nous démontrons qu’elle estimait que la liberté politique pouvait toujours de nouveau surgir aux États-Unis, comme en témoignèrent les manifestations des étudiants américains contre la guerre du Vietnam. De nombreux Américains participaient donc toujours durant les années 1970 à la vie politique de leur pays. La rationalité instrumentale et l’activité du travail ne dominaient donc pas entièrement la société américaine. La modernité est irréductible à l’atomisation et à l’« acosmie » chez Hannah Arendt.
