L'un des problmes les plus difficiles que l'historien doit rsoudre est celui des motivations profondes des acteurs historiques, ce surtout lorsque ceux-ci sont plus ou moins anonymes. Les progrs de la discipline depuis environ un sicle, les opportunits ouvertes et les dfis poss par la rencontre avec les autres disciplines, la qualit des sources primaires maintenant accessibles, font qu'il est aujourd'hui possible de toucher du doigt la solution du problme, voire quelquefois d'entrer, pour ainsi dire, dans la tte des gens les plus ordinaires.
