Abstract
Dumont, sociologue classique ? Dumont, penseur de la modernité ? Nous tentons de répondre à ces questions en empruntant une voie originale, qui est de prendre en considération non seulement l'œuvre écrite mais aussi l'œuvre orale, dont un enseignement magistral de Philosophie sociale que Dumont donne au printemps 1968. L'opposition classique entre société traditionnelle et société technologique constitue l'armature de sa pensée. L'analyse que nous proposons tente d'éviter les deux pièges qui guettent toute lecture d'une œuvre, à savoir la célébration et la critique, pour emprunter une autre démarche, plus difficile, l'analyse sociologique : étude certes de l'époque et du contexte mais aussi de l'itinéraire qu'a suivi Dumont et des diverses positions dans le champ universitaire et intellectuel. Sociologue et philosophe, Dumont se retrouve dans une situation paradoxale : son ambition est d'« historiciser » sa société et sa situation personnelle, mais il cherche aussi à donner à cette histoire (et à son histoire) une portée universelle.
