Au tournant du XX e siècle, la convergence du développement urbain, économique et médiatique favorise un accroissement significatif du nombre de femmes de lettres canadiennes-françaises et crée des conditions favorables à leur percée dans la sphère publique. Les conséquences de ces mutations sociales sur les pratiques associatives en général et sur celles des femmes de lettres en particulier sont importantes. Si la participation des femmes à la grande majorité des regroupements et associations formels et publics de la période suscite des résistances, on constate que les femmes de lettres revendiquent leur voix au chapitre des grands rassemblements et s'initient aux pratiques associatives publiques en formant leurs propres réseaux de solidarités et d'influence. L'étude des activités des femmes de lettres au sein du Conseil national des femmes du Canada, de la Fédération nationale Saint-Jean-Baptiste, puis des cercles d'études pour jeunes filles, révèle l'importance des réseaux et solidarités dans les trajectoires des écrivaines de l'époque.
