Dès son ouverture en 1889, le Musée national d’Athènes devint le plus important des musée de Grèce. Son statut particulier s’inscrit dans son nom : c’est un « musée national », le musée de la nation grecque, présentant les œuvres de la Grèce antique. Il a permis de promouvoir la richesse de la civilisation antique grecque.
