Abstract
A travers l’analyse des tableaux ornant les salons de la bourgeoisie de Kinshasa, l’auteur met en évidence les caractéristiques et les mutations de la représentation de soi et de la société qu’ils mettent en scène. Intrinsèquement masculines, ces représentations évoluent en fonction du contexte économique, politique et social dans lequel elles sont produites. Ainsi, les thèmes historicisants céderaient de plus en plus la place à une célébration ouverte de l’individu ou à la mise en scène de faits bruts d’un quotidien bouleversé par la violence tandis que par ailleurs l’espace public extérieur (bars, places, lieux de culte) détrônerait le salon privé comme lieu d’expression de soi.
