Abstract
Le but de cet article est de résoudre un paradoxe mis à jour par le célèbre économiste japonais Ryutaro Komiya. Comment se fait-il qu'un grand nombre de Japonais lors des deux récentes négociations américano-japonaises sur le commerce ont accepté la validité de la thèse voulant que le déséquilibre commercial entre le Japon et les États-Unis soit causé par le caractère hermétique du marché japonais et ce, en dépit du fait que de nombreux économistes ont souligné que cette thèse est fausse. Cet article démontre que l'argumentation des économistes ne persuade pas parce qu'elle ne traite pas du caractère politique des relations commerciales américano-japonaises ; alors que le discours américain fait référence à cette dimension de la relation. De plus, des deux argumentations contenues dans le discours américain, l'argumentation fondée sur le transnationalisme persuada plus les Japonais que celle fondée sur le mercantilisme
