Since 1999, summers have mainly been hot and dry in the Great Lakes-St. Lawrence region, resulting in important decreases in lake levels and the St. Lawrence River outflow. This phenomenon is in accordance with the expected impacts of climate change in the region: by 2050, global warming should decrease water levels in the Great Lakes by 0.5 to 1 meter and the St. Lawrence River outflow by 20-40%. In Québec, where the St. Lawrence is the source of drinking water for 45% of the population and where recent droughts have forced some municipalities to adopt restrictive measures, public authorities have begun to worry about the sustainability of their water supply.
