Abstract
Le parcours éditorial de Jacques Hébert nous amène à réfléchir sur le rôle de l’éditeur dans le développement culturel d’une société et sur la fragile autonomie des maisons d’édition situées dans un marché contrôlé par les grandes sociétés de distribution étrangères. Journaliste de combat, polémiste, globe-trotter, auteur de nombreux récits de voyages, Jacques Hébert a créé deux maisons d’édition de littérature générale, les Éditions de l’Homme en 1958 et les Éditions du Jour en 1961, qui ont marqué l’histoire culturelle du Québec contemporain. Ces deux entreprises ont été étroitement associées aux débats de la Révolution tranquille et à la promotion de la jeune littérature québécoise. Au cours de sa carrière d’éditeur, de 1958 à 1974, Hébert a fait paraître plus d’un millier d’ouvrages. Inventeur du livre à un dollar, distribué dans les kiosques à journaux et souvent destiné à susciter la polémique, Hébert a été l’éditeur et le découvreur d’écrivains québécois importants dont certains ont connu la notoriété internationale. Son retrait de l’édition découle en partie de la crise que traverse le monde du livre au Québec dans les années 1970.
