Abstract
To locate an early-modern sensibility in the ‘‘modern’’ drama of Christopher Marlowe is to recognize the vital relationship between the blank space of the Renaissance stage and the linguistic efflorescence of the (blank-verse) plays written for it. Marlowe’s dramatic heroes, from Faustus to Tamburlaine, are wanderers; his scenes change quickly from the local to the global to the cosmic, indicating ‘‘the essential meaninglessness of theatrical space, the vacancy that is the dark side of its power to imitate any place’’ (Greenblatt 195). Yet his characters also assert compulsively, often pathetically, the significance of the local for the purpose of defining (i.e., limiting) themselves. It is Faustus, not Mephistopheles, who insists upon returning to Wittenberg to make an end. And despite the fact, as we may agree in general, that a sense of displacement, of homelessness, of radical mobility, characterizes ‘‘modernity,’’ Faustus’s puzzled interrogation of Mephistopheles about the place of damnation continues to haunt our own discussions of the significance of place in modernity and of the locations of culture, especially in the study of drama and theatre.
