Abstract

O objetivo deste estudo foi descrever os conceitos de idoso e de gerontologia e a contribuição do ensino da gerontologia para a vida profissional, na perspectiva dos discentes de enfermagem das instituições públicas do Estado de Minas Gerais. Os dados foram coletados através de entrevista semi-estruturada. Submeteu-se o conteúdo das questões à análise temática e as variáveis quantitativas foram descritas através da freqüência simples. A amostra foi composta por 55 discentes, dos quais 73% estavam na faixa etária entre 20 e 25 anos e 65,5% cursavam o oitavo período. Após a análise dos dados, emergiram as seguintes categorias temáticas: conceito de idoso, representação social do idoso, conceito de gerontologia, ensino enquanto possibilidade de mudança. Através da perspectiva do discente de enfermagem, pode-se inferir que o ensino da gerontologia nos cursos de graduação é primordial para estimular a formação de recursos humanos especializados na área.
