Abstract
L’objectif de cet article est d’analyser l’évolution passée et future du vieillissement démographique en France et au Québec. Longtemps, la France a été plus vieillie que le Québec, mais la situation s’inversera dans un futur proche... Ainsi, en 1961, l’écart entre les âges médians était de l’ordre de 9 ans (24 ans au Québec contre 33 ans en France). En 40 ans, le rattrapage est net: aujourd’hui, la moitié de la population a plus de 38 ans au Québec contre plus de 37 ans en France. Dans 40 ans, le renversement de position sera encore plus marqué, les âges médians s’élevant respectivement à 48,9 ans et 45 ans. L’évolution de la fécondité (en particulier de l’intensité du baby boom) et de la mortalité (par génération), facteurs essentiels de ces parcours contrastés est analysée. La question de l’évolution de l’interdépendance des générations, illustrée par divers indicateurs de structure par âge, est également soulevée.
