Les étudiants et les étudiantes peuvent et doivent exercer un leadership pour orienter les institutions d’enseignement supérieur vers un écodéveloppement durable. Dans cet article, nous exposons un plan d'écodéveloppement qui vise à favoriser le passage de l'intention aux actions en misant sur les étudiantes et les étudiants pour faire des universités et des cégeps des institutions exemplaires, non seulement par le cadre de vie qu'elles offrent, mais aussi, et surtout, par le contenu de leurs programmes de formation et de recherche. Un élément central de ce plan est l'apprentissage du service communautaire par lequel les connaissances et ressources des étudiantes et des étudiants peuvent être mobilisées au service de la communauté. C’est pourquoi nous discutons également des enjeux et des conséquences d'un tel engagement citoyen, notamment à la lumière des résultats d'une analyse faite dans le cadre d'un cours d'éducation à l'environnement et au développement durable offert à l’Université de Sherbrooke. Dans un troisième temps, nous décrivons un projet de création d’un portail web qui permettrait à des étudiantes et des étudiants de l’Université de Sherbrooke d’utiliser les compétences disciplinaires développées dans leurs cours ou projets de recherche pour aider des organismes communautaires œuvrant pour le développement viable de la région à mieux accomplir leur mission.
