Résumé Au cœur de la réussite du processus de transfert de direction se trouve la crédibilité que le successeur doit établir et que le dirigeant sortant doit aider à bâtir. Afin d’optimiser la réussite des successions au sein des entreprises familiales, cet article tire des leçons de quatre cas de succession de femmes dirigeantes de PME qui sont bien entamés ou qui se sont bien déroulés. Les entrevues réalisées mettent en lumière le fait qu’un successeur crédible doit présenter trois caractéristiques : avoir des compétences «à valeur ajoutée», exercer un leadership gagnant et se montrer honnête. Nos résultats indiquent aussi que les dirigeantes sortantes peuvent accroître la crédibilité de leur successeur en lui faisant confiance et en lui exprimant cette confiance, en l’inspirant et en agissant comme modèle auprès de lui, en l’amenant à développer ses compétences, en collaborant et en communiquant avec lui et, enfin, en exerçant un leadership empathique envers le successeur.
