Abstract
La Franco-Américanie en Nouvelle-Angleterre apparaît à la fin du XIXe siècle comme la société francophone la plus prolétarisée d'Amérique du Nord. Sollicités par les besoins de main-d'oeuvre bon marché de l'industrie américaine en pleine expansion, les Québécois commencent à émigrer en masse dès la guerre civile aux États-Unis (1861-1865). En deux vagues successives dont les sommets se situent autour de 1865 et 1890, l'exode des petits fermiers de la vallée du Saint-Laurent s'est concentré autour de villes moyennes comme Manchester, N.H., Lowell ou Fall River, Mass. Dès leur établissement, les populations francophones de la Nouvelle-Angleterre fondèrent paroisses sur paroisses et tentèrent de maintenir vivantes leurs traditions ancestrales, sous l'impulsion d'un clergé nationaliste et d'une petite bourgeoisie très conservatrice. C'est ainsi que sont nés les Petits Canadas dans toutes les villes industrielles du nord-est américain, sauf Boston, véritables enclaves québécoises dans la société anglo-protestante plus vaste. Par l'exemple de Woonsocket au Rhode Island, l'auteur tente d'illustrer les caractères historiques de cette partie majeure de la diaspora québécoise en Amérique du Nord; preuve de l'immense influence au XIXe siècle, de la République américaine sur le développement d'un Québec moderne.
