Abstract
La mobilité (nomadisme) est un des traits qui fondent l'identité québécoise. Cette mobilité date des origines mêmes de la Nouvelle-France, où les migrants ajoutèrent à leur héritage nomade, l'influence d'un espace immense et neuf et celle de l'Indien. Tradition et rapports économiques jouent dans l'explication : se succèdent des exploitations du milieu qui obligent aux déplacements, qui entretiennent cette continuité dans la mobilité : fourrures, bois, mines, construction. Le nomadisme obligé/choisi a été nié et contré par l'élite du pays qui a construit une identité paysanne et des stratégies anti-mouvance (colonisation) et anti-libertaire (encadrement clérical). C'est l'américanité refusée. Ainsi, une continuité dans la mobilité et dans sa négation. Les Québécois ne sont pas peuple de l'espace, se contentant de le parcourir. Les Québécois « occupent » la durée : l'élite se contente des symboles de la permanence dans un espace qu'elle ne possède pas. Le peuple conserve le « lieu » de la parenté (famille étendue) partout en Amérique.
