Abstract
The article explores the violent nature and effects of racism perpetrated against Black youth in the United States and proposes a Black church agenda of co-action with and on behalf of these youth to engender hopeful living and ways of addressing experiences of racism forthrightly. The agenda centres on the engagement of oppositional practices, entailing the recall of the Old Testament story of Hagar for purposes of inviting the youth and community’s lament before God, yearning for a different future, and discovery of a way forward with hope. The agenda further draws on Marian Wright Edelman’s paradigm of advocacy, including Black cultural historical materials found in it, as means of identifying strategies to empower the co-action of Black youth, their families, and extended family of the church to confront racially motivated violence against these youth.
