Nous proposons de démontrer que les concepts d’exclusion et d’altérité sont au centre de Cantique des plaines , non seulement en termes d’intrigue et de personnages, mais aussi en termes de l’acte même de lecture(s). Nous verrons qu’une analyse de ces concepts ne saurait s’arrêter au niveau thématique, et qu’il n’est pas possible d’isoler l’exclusion des personnages de la problématique de l’identitaire qui est au coeur de la mosaïque historique, culturelle et sociale canadienne : à l’aide de l’article «Truth in Fiction: A Reexamination of Audiences» de Peter Rabinowitz, nous verrons donc que Nancy Huston amène tous ses lecteurs – qu’ils soient français ou canadien-français – à partiellement faire l’expérience de l’aliénation des personnages.
