La disponibilité d'espace, la place de l'individu et les valeurs émanant de leurs rapports se matérialisent dans l'univers domestique. L'aménagement de la maison et les caractéristiques de son mobilier incarnent des manières de vivre et de penser. La non-fixité remarquée dans l'espace domestique du XVIII e siècle a favorisé la polyvalence des meubles. Ces meubles et leur disposition dans l'habitat reflètent un rapport particulier entre les individus et l'environnement domestique. Dans un intérieur domestique à aires ouvertes, où la polyvalence caractérise les composantes, l'usage d'un siège mobile, léger, malléable comme la chaise s'avère d'une commodité incontestable. Le fait de préférer la chaise au banc peut-elle indiquer une tendance vers l'individualisme et la liberté de circulation? De plus, le réaménagement périodique des lieux après un changement de logis ou simplement pour « changer d'air » en allant vivre de façon saisonnière dans la cuisine d'été ou au chalet, par exemple, suggère aussi le goût du mouvement, du changement, voire d'un esprit disponible à la nouveauté.
