Embora a abordagem da formação por competências exerça hoje uma atração cada vez maior no ensino e na formação dos educadores, ganhou notoriedade inicialmente em outros domínios, antes de impor-se no mundo escolar. Neste artigo, serão apresentados, de maneira sumária, alguns dos fatores contextuais que concorreram para a introdução dessa abordagem nas políticas educativas e nos programas escolares. Em seguida, tentaremos passar em revista as principais definições que lhe foram dadas, discernir o papel que os autores lhe conferem no ensino superior e na formação para o ensino e, por fim, introduzir o delicado problema da medida de competência.
