La technique commerciale qui consiste à vendre certains produits en publicisant la personnalité privée de certains individus prend son origine dans ce qu’Hollywood a appelé le « star system ». L’industrie de la culture et des médias a généralisé le procédé : son extension a transformé des personnalités de toutes sortes en « stars », c’est-à-dire en images vivantes et rémunératrices. La concurrence a alors conduit à des formes variées d’altérations du système, particulièrement présentes à la télévision.
