Entre 1692 et 1760, les autorités coloniales françaises offrirent de façon intermittente des récompenses en marchandises aux guerriers autochtones qui leur apportaient des chevelures ennemies. Plusieurs historiens ont attribué à tort à la politique française de paiement des scalps les mêmes modalités qu’avaient celles des colonies anglaises. Or notre examen du sujet révèle le caractère fort particulier et cohérent de la politique de la Nouvelle-France. Les primes furent perçues comme un des moyens les plus efficaces d’assurer la survie de la présence coloniale française en encourageant les alliés amérindiens à prendre le sentier de la guerre. Elles n’eurent pas pour autant comme effet de dénaturer les coutumes de ces derniers ou de subordonner leur intérêts.
